Many parents are aware that there has been a huge increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders in the past few decades, but many have not yet heard of neurofeedback treatment for autism. Neurofeedback brain training is an effective treatment for many autistic children, allowing their brains to self-modulate and improve their function.
What Results Do Parents See From Neurofeedback Brain Training?

- More frequent initiation of contact
- Better focus and attention
- Increased response to parent and teacher’s instruction

- Decreased hyperactivity
“Brainwave patterns in those with Asperger’s syndrome differ from those of the same age peers. We have seen many people with Asperger’s syndrome at our ADD Centre over the past decade and have found that they respond well to neurofeedback training.”
– Dr. Lynda Thompson
What Is The Incidence of Autism?
Just a few decades ago, in the 70’s and 80’s, only one in 2000 children was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). As of 2014, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate this number at one in 68 children in the USA. Boys are affected five times as often as girls. More than 70 million people worldwide are on the autism spectrum.
How Common Is Autism In Canada?
In Canada the numbers are similar – in only the last decade, occurrences have doubled, which makes autism both the fastest-growing and most commonly diagnosed neurological disorder. Learn more at Autism Speaks Canada.
Connection Between Autism And ADHD
Recent studies have suggested that between 30 to 61% of individuals with autism also have symptoms of ADHD. In the general population, ADHD only affects 6 to 7% of people. Until 2013, the American Psychiatric Association’s guidelines specified that a person could be diagnosed with either autism or ADHD, but not both, which has made it more difficult for those with both disorders to find treatment. Neurotherapy can be an effective intervention for both autism and ADHD.
Best Treatment For Autism
There is no specific cure for autism, nor is there any “best autism treatment”, since symptoms can vary widely. There are a number of treatments for autism that have proven effective in reducing symptoms and increasing the ability to function.
Neurofeedback has proven effective in helping those diagnosed with autism sustain focus and attention, and improve social skills. Less aggression, more cooperation, and better communication are results which have been reported (see clinical trial). Other reports speak of improved social interactions, emotional responsiveness, emotion recognition, and significantly better behavior in everyday life. This aligns with what our clients have experienced.
Neurofeedback Treatment For Autism
One of the huge benefits of neurofeedback treatment for autism is that it is drug-free, so side-effects or drug interactions aren’t a concern. It’s also an enjoyable therapy for many children. Once they’ve had a couple of sessions, they can be eager to return to “play computer games.” Our clients have commented on this as they bring their children to our Toronto area neurofeedback centre for treatment for autism. So have their children:
“It’s because it’s really starting to help me. I have noticed I can focus better in school, my anxiety is less and I really enjoy it.”
– Austin
When medication is terminated, its benefits are too. However, with neurofeedback brain training for autism treatment, the benefits which are learned over the course of a series of sessions tend to be retained. Once a new brain pattern is learned, it is sustainable, so results from autism neurofeedback treatment last beyond the training sessions.
