A Safe & Effective Form of Therapy for PTSD

PTSD Awareness

Since June is PTSD Awareness month, we encourage you to share this article with friends who may not be aware that we offer a safe form of therapy for PTSD. Neurotherapy can offer great relief for many individuals struggling with its symptoms. PTSD also occurs in children, and we can help them in a safe and non-threatening environment. We offer a free introductory consultation for anyone wanting to learn more about how neurofeedback can reduce the symptoms of PTSD.

What Is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental illness which may develop after a triggering event which is frightening or distressing, or after prolonged trauma. PTSD can cause intrusive, reoccurring, involuntary incidents including nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance and other stress-related symptoms. PTSD results in impairment of social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Symptoms Of PTSD

PTSD symptoms fall into three main areas.

  1. Re-experiencing the traumatic event(s) through flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive memories.
  2. Increased arousal such as hypervigilance, jumpiness, difficulty sleeping or keeping focused, mood swings or sudden irritation or anger.
  3. Emotional numbness or blocking, avoiding topics or places that are reminders of the trauma.

What Causes PTSD?

PTSD may be caused by exposure to threatened or actual serious injury, sexual violation or death, whether the threat is to oneself or others.

  • Experiencing the traumatic event(s) personally
  • Witnessing the traumatic event(s) in person
  • Learning of violent or accidental events that seriously threatened a family member, loved one or close friend
  • Experiencing extreme or repeated direct exposure to the harsh details of violent or traumatic events. Examples of those exposed in the workplace may include police officers, paramedics, firefighters and other first responders.

Neurofeedback For PTSD

EEG Biofeedback, also known as neurotherapy or neurofeedback, is a non-invasive therapy for PTSD. It gives the individual a feeling of safety and control, while they encourage their brain to develop resiliency. It’s fun and engaging, even for children with PTSD, and of course drug free.

The neurotherapy for PTSD session takes the form of a game that employs visual, auditory, and tactile feedback. Progress in the game depends on the participant establishing a calmer, more focused mental and emotional state, as monitored by EEG feedback. This allows the individual to train their brain to achieve these states more regularly and easily.

Several military bases have done this form of brain training therapy with hundreds of participants and significant success in treating PTSD.
